Steam provided much of the motive power behind the agricultural explosion of the nineteenth century. Alongside the railroad steam engines that hauled people from place to place and goods from farm to city were the steam powered farm tractors.
These smoke belching behemoths allowed a farmer to increase his productivity ten or twenty-fold. The Heritage Farm Museum and Village features a growing collection of these steam workhorses
Pictured here is a 1914 Case 40 horsepower steam tractor which was not only a powerful tool for farming but is a classic of American industrial design.
