Education of children was the responsibility of the community, and in West Virginia, it often took place in the one room schoolhouse.
This school was moved from Lick Creek in Wayne County in two sections due to narrow roads and was placed near the site of the Ratcliff School which was originally located on the farm. It has been completely restored to its original condition.
A teacher would be recruited to work with students who usually ranged in age from 6 to 13. The education of all these groups took place in the tiny schoolhouse.
